I see compositions everywhere – flattening the view ahead of me into elements of color, texture, line and form.
When I paint I don’t predict what’s going to happen. Though I love to sketch whimsically, particularly when I travel, I find that trying to make studies of a painting intellectualizes the process. For me painting has to be spontaneous and intuitive.
Eventually choices have to be made in order for the painting to come together, but these choices are visceral and must resonate for the work to feel whole.
It’s the landscape of the subconscious that inspires me most.
